Not long before his death, Jesus told the people plainly, ‘I am the Son of God’, and they took up stones to throw at him.

For nearly three years Jesus had taught them and supported his teaching with a wonderfully good life and by his miracles, but in vain. Many of the officials would not believe. Jesus may have prayed as Jeremiah did: ‘I hear so many disparaging me but the Lord is at my side, a mighty hero!’ I too might tell the Lord of my troubles and ask why he has left me to suffer so much, but in the end I will say with the psalmist:, ‘I cried to my God for help, and he heard my voice.’
